Hello, I'm Beth Eckerd, and I'm a licensed psychologist in Medford, Oregon. I've lived here in the valley with my spouse and dog since 2014. Since receiving my Ph.D. in 2004, I've had 2 careers: one as a professor at Humboldt State University (now Cal Poly Humboldt) and, since 2014, my current work as a therapist in private practice.
The fundamental belief underlying my approach to psychotherapy is that we’re all on a journey of becoming our truest selves. Each of us possesses our own unique wisdom to guide this journey, but sometimes we get stuck. The stories we tell ourselves about our lives and problems might not be true anymore, and perhaps never were. We can explore these stories, and find ways to adjust them to better reflect the real you.
My two specialty areas are: eating issues, especially emotional eating/food addiction; and grief and loss. A sub-specialty is working with people who have had, or plan to have, bariatric surgery. I also enjoy working with clients with depression and relationship issues.
I think of each client and myself as forming a team, and we'll decide together on the best treatment goals and approach for you. I use a variety of approaches in therapy, depending on each client's problems and preferences. Frequently used approaches are psychodynamic, attachment-based, internal family systems (IFS), cognitive behavioral, person-centered, and mindfulness.
